1% for the Planet - Our Commitment to Environmental Giving
As a business, Rohallion has always supported environmental causes, such as reducing carbon through tree planting. As we grew in 2024, we reviewed our commitment to important initiatives and decided to go in a slightly different direction.
Rohallion has now officially joined the 1% for the Planet global network of businesses playing a vital part in driving positive impact. Donating 1% of our annual sales directly to vetted environmental partners in Scotland, and elsewhere, is a significant undertaking we’re delighted to make.
Since 2002, over 4,800 business members have donated approximately £535m to around 7,200 environmental organisations worldwide. We’re proud to be doing our bit for people and the planet too.
Our Drupal Engineer, Chris Wales says: “Protecting the planet is important to me. Walking my dog, Arlo, through Scotland’s landscapes, I see first-hand how crucial it is to look after these places. The more time we spend outdoors, the clearer it becomes that conservation is key — which is why we’ve committed to supporting environmental causes here in Scotland. Being consulted on the organisations is important to me because it ensures we back the right causes to help preserve them for the future.”
Helping to protect Scotland’s stunning surroundings
Having only recently joined, we’re still reviewing the Scotland-based causes we’d like to support. We’ll be looking for organisations with similar values to our own where we can make a demonstrable difference through environmental giving.
One of the many great things about 1% for the Planet is the transparency around donating directly to the participating organisations. This is important to us in terms of ensuring we make a positive impact. Our previous environmental commitment, while well-intentioned, lacked that local and tangible feeling we could connect with emotionally.
We’re lucky to have so much world-famous scenery in and around Scotland, including oceans, beaches, rivers, mountains and scenic trails. It’s our responsibility to do whatever we can to preserve our natural surroundings for the here and now, and the generations to come.
We’ve not signed up to 1% for the Planet because we want to shout about our commitment to potential clients but because we genuinely care. Everyone at Rohallion loves the great outdoors, and the inspiration for our company's name came from Rohallion Loch in Perthshire.
Marek Golebiewski, Drupal Engineer, came to Scotland from Poland in 2007. “Taking care of the environment is vital, as I want to make sure my young sons can fully enjoy both the flora and fauna that surround us for their entire lives. Looking after nature has always been important for my family, and I’m really glad and proud that Rohallion shares our passion. Part of my daily routine is long morning walks and I’ve been struck by the country’s natural beauty since I arrived in Scotland almost 20 years ago. We should all be taking part in protecting the environment as much as possible”, he says.
Playing our part for future generations
It all comes down to making an impact in the places that matter to us and local communities. Being able to see the results of our donations and volunteering will further motivate us to pledge year after year. We’re looking forward to learning more about the various ways organisations are protecting and enhancing the environment by getting our hands dirty.
While we don’t have a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility policy at Rohallion, we always aim to be environmentally responsible and to do the right thing. It’s vital we help local environmental organisations to thrive and continue the work that will benefit all of us and our children and grandchildren.
We’re only starting this journey and can’t wait to see and hear about the positive changes our donations will deliver. It’s not about us though; we’d love to inspire other local businesses to get involved. A member survey conducted by 1% for the Planet in 2023 found that 97% of business members said they’d highly recommend others to join.
